The Many Reasons That We Need Sufficient Sleep

Sleep is an important and an essential part of a person’s overall general well-being, yet getting enough sleep is a major problem for millions of people all over the world. Some people that have difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep may be plagued with an untreated sleep disorder, but for many others, they just don’t think they “need” sleep.

A lot of people think that they can survive on less than six hours of sleep, and they do so due to life. Maybe they are overworked, or choose to party instead of sleep, or maybe they’re just really busy. Whatever the case may be, regardless of what they think or have convinced themselves, not getting enough sleep is not okay. Not getting enough sleep can actually be dangerous to one’s health.

The Effects of Not Getting Enough Sleep

Not only is it extremely dangerous to not get enough sleep for reasons like driving or operating machinery, because accidents can happen. But it can also lead to health problems. If you’re not getting enough zzz’s, then it could lead to sleep deprivation.

Sleep deprivations signs and symptoms may include: 

  • The inability to handle the stresses of life.
  • Memory problems and the inability to concentrate. You might not be as sharp as you normally would be if you had a good night’s rest.
  • Increased appetite and weight gain.
  • Increased risk for psychiatric problems.
  • Visual problems such as difficulty focusing and visual distortions.
  • Poor decision making and diminished motor skills.
  • Relationship troubles due to sleep disturbances, moodiness, etc.
  • Medical problems may include:  high blood pressure, a confused heart rate that is unable to find it’s rhythm, lower body temperature, diabetics becoming less sensitive to their insulin, a poor immune system, etc.

How much sleep do we actually need?

Contrary to popular belief, we don’t need 8 hours of sleep each night to survive our days. There is no “magic number” when it comes to how much sleep you need, because each individual person is different. The amount of sleep that one person needs to be bright as a whip, might not be the same as the next person. Some people can survive with 6 hours and some people need 8 hours, while others need 7, 9 or as much as 10. However, with that said, some studies do suggest at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep is sufficient.

How to Get a Better Night’s Rest without Counting Sheep

There are actually many things that you can do to get a good night’s rest. Some may seem harder to do than others. Probably the hardest of all and the one that requires the most work is to avoid or reduce stress levels.

You’ll also want to avoid drinking any alcohol or beverages that contain caffeine in the afternoon or evening, as these will make it harder to fall asleep later. Try not to interrupt your normal sleep rhythm. For example, this happens with many people that work nights or with people that travel.

If your sleep rhythm does become interrupted from these things, try to catch up on sleep as soon as you can. Keep your sleeping environment comfortable; for example - the room temperature, your bed, etc. Eat healthy and live a healthy lifestyle.

Last but not least, and certainly the easiest of all is to consider investing in earplugs and sleep masks for a good night’s sleep. If you have trouble falling asleep due to a noisy environment, the earplugs can greatly help you get that much needed sleep.
